Walking can improve workplaces, reconnect communities, invigorate local economies and better one’s health, says CMSC Board Member Bernard L. Kavaler in a recent opinion piece for the Hartford Courant.
Mr. Kavaler suggests employees would be happier, and the local economy richer, if workers spent their lunch hours on Main Street rather than sitting at their desks. He also notes that people, especially young people, are demanding to live in downtown, and they want buildings that offer them a mix of uses coupled with the ability to easily walk between work and home. He writes, “The prospects of transit-oriented development, as new bus and rail options get started, add to the potential. Connecticut Main Street Center, YES CT! (Young Energetic Solutions) and Bike Walk Connecticut, from complementary perspectives, are among the numerous inspired and inspiring organizations driving progress.”
