(Hartford, CT – November 23, 2010) – The United Illuminating Company (UI) has awarded Connecticut Main Street Center (CMSC) a $10,000 grant for Main Street technical assistance on behalf of 12 communities in UI’s service area. UI has been a CMSC Growth Sponsor since 2007, funding over $60,000 in CMSC technical assistance programs to Connecticut communities.
“UI is pleased to continue our support of Connecticut Main Street Center. CMSC provides much-needed resources to Connecticut communities in expertise, technical assistance and advocacy in downtown revitalization,” said Shelly Saczynski, Director of Economic & Community Development with UI and Chair of CMSC’s Board of Directors.
Under Saczynski’s leadership, CMSC has nearly completed a 3-year comprehensive strategic plan that positions the organization to be the champion for downtown-friendly state and local government policies and the statewide resource for technical assistance to CMSC members.
Jobs Increase in Main Street Communities
“On behalf of the board and staff of CMSC, I am grateful for UI’s continued support as a Growth Sponsor of our organization. The United Illuminating Company’s generous support leverages our ability to provide the services and assistance our members need to achieve results that matter,” said John Simone, CMSC President & CEO. “From June 2007 to June 2010, while the nation and the state reeled from the loss of jobs, our designated Main Street programs saw an 18% net increase in jobs. Vibrant downtowns create economic growth and generate tax revenue – it is vitally important to Connecticut’s economy that the Main Street Approach is supported as a comprehensive downtown revitalization method.”
