We have a responsibility to support small businesses, the owners and the employees, to ensure that people have salaries and that the backbone of our local economies is not destroyed, writes Ilana Preuss,  Founder of Recast City LLC, a consulting firm that works with real estate developers, city and other civic leaders to integrate space for small-scale producers into redevelopment projects and place-based economic development.

Her article lists three steps every community needs to take (with backup support from state and federal governments) to help our local small businesses survive this pause:

  • Step 1: Strengthen social connections between business owners and with the local government
  • Step 2: Help business owners find new forms of revenue to survive this alternate reality economy
