Alan Mallach, esteemed author and Senior Fellow at the Center for Community Progress, will join us at the Lyceum on Monday, December 9, 2019. Mallach’s presentation, “It’s a Big Country: Understanding America’s Multiple Affordable Housing Crises,” will explore the disparities and complexities of housing affordability across the United States, including examples from Connecticut.
Key themes of the presentation include:

  • Disparities between homeowner and renter affordability;
  • Preservation of affordable housing;
  • Housing supply;
  • Naturally Occurring Affordable Housing (NOAH); and
  • Policy recommendations

Mallach’s most recent book, The Divided City: Poverty and Prosperity in Urban America, analyzes the post-industrial decline of America’s legacy cities, and the subsequent resurgence of many city downtowns. He explores the impacts of this decline and resurgence, with a focus on racial and economic inequality. Mallach brings decades of experience in housing policy, economic development, and urban revitalization.
