Step Two: Send an Exit Survey

(Skip this step if you are hiring an executive for the first time.)

Do you know why your previous Main Street Executive is leaving?

Understanding why they are leaving can bring your organization some insight on how to better support the role, and ultimately your Main Street.

While every situation is unique, ask the individual to complete an exit survey to learn about the benefits and detractions of their role and any issues that need attention.

If the Main Street Executive is retiring, consider having an informal conversation in addition to the exit survey to hear their perspective on the role, the organization, and ideas for improvement.

Time Frame

  • Have the Board President or Search Committee Chair administer and collect the exit survey within the last few days of employment of the outgoing Main Street Executive.
