A Come Home to Downtown Community
New Britain was one of two communities chosen to participate in the second year of the successful Come Home to Downtown program (Meriden was the other). This program, which is supported by the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA), aims to strengthen communities by creating specific strategies to redevelop vacant or underutilized buildings into a mix of uses and housing choices.
New Britain was chosen in large part because of its commitment to mass transit and developing the area around that transit. In fact, New Britain is well on its way to becoming a leader in progressively integrating multiple forms of transit, including CTfastrak – the new rapid busway – with its downtown development. Additionally, the owner of the property chosen to participate in the Come Home to Downtown program is committed to mixed-use development and looks forward to increasing the amount of housing available in downtown New Britain.
The building at 99 West Main Street will receive customized technical assistance from CMSC and its team of expert consultants. They will work with municipal officials and the building owner to develop viable redevelopment options including identifying financing opportunities and a recommended floor plan designed to attract new residents and bring market rate housing downtown.
CMSC has also convened an advisory team consisting of members from the City and local downtown stakeholders. CMSC offers guidance to the local officials on how to facilitate mixed-use development in the downtown, assessing issues such as zoning and regulatory requirements, while the advisory team provides valuable feedback on the redevelopment options proposed by the CMSC team.
