Amazon.com is investing millions of dollars in downtown Seattle as it builds new headquarters, reports the New York Times.  The development will bring thousands of workers to the downtown area, reshaping the landscape as the offices are built, in addition to the new housing, retails, restaurants and entertainment venues that are already springing up to meet the new demand.   As part of the deal with the City, Amazon plans to purchase a street car for the light rail line which runs past its properties and to fund a section of dedicated bicycle lane.  Part of the company’s motivation in choosing the location was its urban setting, acknowledging that employees prefer a walkable, vibrant environment close to their jobs.
